General description of the collection: The Werner E. Michel collection contains, three Korean War propaganda fliers, newspaper clippings about Michel, Michel's discharge sheet, clippings and a monograph about Klaus Barbie, a printed book about United Nations Prisoners of War (POW) and photographs of German soldiers and towns during World War II (WWII). A page torn from the 60th Regiments weekly newspaper has an article with Michel mentioned and pictured. Several documents in the collection are in German. The bulk of the documents are related to Klaus Barbie a Nazi Gestapo officer who fled to Bolivia after WWII.

Colonel Werner E. Michel was born in Landau, Germany. He arrived in the United States in December 1936, at age 12, as part of a program placing Jewish refugee children with American families. Michel served in U.S. Army intelligence in Europe during World War II. He was part of the Military Intelligence Division (MID) and the 3rd Infantry Division during his career and saw service in Germany, Korea and Vietnam. He retired in 1974.
